The movie is over 30 years old, the book is over 45 years old, and yet the story is still as beloved (and quoted) as ever. To quote the movie, it has something for everyone: “fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles.”
I am personally a huge fan of the incredibly witty banter, but here are few more highlights…
-
The sass of Westley
Of all the characters, Westley is undoubtedly the master of comebacks. Whether it be pre-fight, post-fight, lying prone on a torture table, completely paralysed from the neck down, about to enter a dangerous fire swamp, fighting off R.O.U.S’s… the list goes on.
-
The fencing
One of the greatest things about the fencing scene between Westley and Inigo is that there is no use of CGI or stunt doubles. What we have here are two actors that trained very hard for a very long time – and the results are legendary!
-
Extended bouts of eye contact, filled with passion and longing
100% swoon worthy. Can I request 1 farm boy, please?
-
The endlessly quotable lines, including the best of them all…
-
True love is the greatest thing in the world…
Except for a nice MLT – mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe.
-
Did I mention quotable lines?
-
Buttercup being equal parts elegant and feisty
Did someone say goals?
P.S. Shout out to the incomparable Robin Wright, still kicking-ass on our screens to this day in House of Cards and Wonder Woman!
-
Obscure but amazing real life references
-
Triumph over evil bad guys
We get the satisfaction of Inigo finally facing the 6-fingered man, Westley spectacularly outwitting not only Vizzini, but Humperdinck too. There’s nothing we love more than a romantic story with a happy ending, and The Princess Bride gives us the heroes, the adventures, the romance, and all the feels.
In short… perfection.
