Cartoon Animal BrOTPs

OTP: One True Pairing. Meaning your favourite combination of characters in a fandom.

BrOTP: Similar to OTP, this refers to a set of best friends in a show, book or movie who are destined to be best friends forever.

While everyone’s favourite Lion might be the star of live action remake of The Lion King, set to release on July 17th, there’s no-one I’m more excited to see than Timon and Pumbaa. They’re the iconic embodiment of best-buds, and one of my BrOTPs. Growing up on cartoons taught me so many things, but above all they championed the power of friendship (and that the answer to wacky hijinks is ALWAYS a yes). So read on for a list of who I think are the best animal amigos…

Timon and Pumbaa – The Lion King

I just talked about them, so of course they were getting a mention. These two taught me that friendship means accepting each other no matter what. They’ve stuck together through thick and thin, and they welcomed Simba into their family when he had nowhere else to go. Who could ask for better bros?

Also, Hakuna Matata is a TUNE.

Winnie The Pooh and Piglet – Winnie The Pooh

via GIPHY

You know when you’ve had a hard day and your bestie knows it’s time to roll you up in a blanket burrito style, put on your favourite movie and plie you with snacks? That’s the kind of friendship Pooh and Piglet share. Piglet is timid and anxious, but Pooh brings out the best in him, and Piglet’s quick thinking always gets Pooh out of trouble. They’re the sweetest friends and six-year-old me wanted to live in the Hundred Acre Wood with them more than ANYTHING.

…ok twenty-six year old me also still wants this. Don’t judge me.

Max and Duke – The Secret Life Of Pets

Sometimes our friends end up being the people we least expect. Max and Duke don’t start out as buddies, but when they’re forced to stick together through some rough times they figure out that life is better when you’re with a bro!

Dory and Marlin – Finding Nemo

via GIPHY

We’ve all got that one friend who is our complete opposite, yet somehow it works. Dory and Marlin’s friendship sure isn’t a conventional one, but it thrives because of their differences. Marlin’s a bit neurotic and a total pessimist, the reverse to Dory’s playful optimism. Her short-term memory loss is hard for Marlin to understand at first, but he learns that all that matters is her kindness. Now that’s a friendship I want to be part of!

Alex, Marty, Melman & Gloria – Madagascar

via GIPHY

There’s nothing like hanging out with your squad – the group of people who you know you just click with. The crew from Madagascar aren’t the most obvious buddies, but they complement each other perfectly, and they’re always there to help one another out – even if it means following them to a foreign country! Plus, this movie is proof that carnivores and vegans can be friends.

Bambi and Thumper – Bambi

via GIPHY

Your friends are the ones you turn to when times are tough, and Thumper is there for Bambi in his hardest moments. (*sniff* I’m not crying, you’re crying!) Thumper shows Bambi the brighter side of life, and the two are inseparable, even when love changes their dynamic. Friendships can change, but Bambi and Thumper’s bromance stands the true test of time.

Manny, Sid & Diego – Ice Age

via GIPHY

These three might get on each other’s nerves (or at least Sid get’s on everyone else’s nerves), but deep down they’re little cinnamon rolls. Their friendship lasts through danger, betrayal and a perilous journey, and if that isn’t true friendship then I don’t know what is.

Also bonus points for Scrat and his acorn – the ultimate OTP. I want someone to look at me the way he looks at that nut.

Tod and Copper – The Fox And The Hound

via GIPHY

A fox named Tod and a hound dog named Copper – how could they be anything but enemies? These two defy their destiny to stay friends and show everyone that mateship transcends all barriers. If that isn’t the most wholesome display of mateship you’ve seen today, I’ll eat my hat.

Judy and Nick – Zootopia

via GIPHY

Judy is a straight-shooting Rabbit of the law, so her friendship with con-artist Nick doesn’t come naturally. But after these two are unwittingly thrown together and forced to work out their differences, they become an unstoppable pair. The best kind of friends are the ones who aren’t afraid to challenge your ideas if it means watching you succeed, and Nick and Judy do just that.

If you love a crime solving duo, you might enjoy reading the Bree and Tanner Thriller series by Janie Crouch, starting with Calculated Risk.

Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie and Spike – Land Before Time

via GIPHY

So they aren’t exactly animals, but The Land Before Time crew are without a doubt one of the cutest friendship gangs to grace every 90s kid’s TV screen. These five look out for each other, work together and form a family as they battle the big wide world. Just try and tell me Cera isn’t the biggest softie in the group, I will fight.
