The 1995 classic Clueless has a special place in the heart of those who grew up in the 90s and, dear reader, this includes some of us over here at romance.com.au and I’m sure many of you too!
It’s a movie that continues to consume Xers to Millennials and to Gen Zers, and it is just timeless enough for every generation to think it’s speaking directly to them.
There is something about watching this film during #iso that has brought enormous comfort, whether it is the witty dialogue, the fashion choices or the soundtrack that takes us back to endless carefree summers before Climate Crisis and COVID.
Of course, we know that Clueless is loosely based on Emma by THE Jane Austen and I think everyone has done some form of comparative text study between the two since HSC 2001, but allow us to recap and reminisce…
The google recap provides us with a tight synopsis –
Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was — and falls for him…
From the outset of the film, everything is just so optimistically upbeat and wholesome and bright, just like a Californian spray tan…
Let’s count the ways we love re-watching the film –
1. Adore the fashion
So dated is the fashion, that I’m pretty sure these looks are back on the fashion week (virtual) catwalks now…
2. The classic one liners
I think we all said this way too many times as teenagers…the saying is so passé it made it all the way back onto Urban Dictionary in 2017…
And of course who can forget the universal sign off for casual resignation…
3. The music
4. The romance hits & misses
We all felt for Cher (and have been there in some way or another) when she goes for Christian…
And last, but not least…
5. The age defying Paul Rudd
And finally, can we just take a moment to appreciate how Paul Rudd has not aged in over 25 years!
So whilst Cher may be (a virgin who can’t drive)
…the makeovers, the variation on the enemies–to-lovers trope between Cher and Josh and all the matchmaking and scheming got us thinking about these great romance reads you could binge on from our e-book deals and reads right now …
And remember to #readmoreathome and…as Tai says (I hope not sporadically)
