The inspiration behind my book: Portofino (and Beyoncé)

by Lee Christine

My husband and I celebrated my 50th birthday with a trip to Europe. We travelled for ten days around Switzerland by train, spent some time poking around Vienna, then flew to Venice to pick up a cruise ship. For sixteen days we visited some of the most picturesque parts of the world including Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Malta, Sicily, the Amalfi Coast and the Cinque Terre villages along the Italian Riviera.

When we docked in Portofino, the locals were buzzing with news. Beyoncé was in town. Queen Bey had recently purchased a super-yacht for her music producer/rapper husband, Jay Z. The yacht was anchored in the bay.

lee2As we wandered through the historic village and caught a local bus to Santa Marguerita, I began thinking of the naval architects and engineers who design and construct not only multi-million-dollar leisure vessels like the one ‘Bey’ had purchased, but battle ships, aircraft carriers and submarines. My imagination kicked into gear.

My heroine in A Dangerous Arrangement is a violinist. What better setting could I have than the original home of classical music—Italy? By the end of our holiday, I’d settled on my hero’s occupation as well. Dean Logan is naval architect to the stars, captain of Australia’s America’s Cup team and a hero of the ill-fated Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Yes, the beautiful Amalfi Coast had certainly worked its magic.

With a little help from Beyoncé.
