What I’m supposed to talk about … and what I want to talk about

by Kate

This is what I’m supposed to talk about:
I’m going away on holiday, and that means some stuff for Escape.

This is what I really want to talk about:

Lizzie and Darcy getting it doneSo let’s get the dull stuff over and done with, and then get to the good stuff, yeah?

I’m going away on holidays! It’s going to be fun! For me! Possibly not as much for you, but there is a long weekend in there, so I hope you have fun things planned too.

Now, this has implications for submissions – if you’ve submitted to us over the last week, you would have received notification that any submissions received March 17th and April 7th will have a response time of 4 weeks, instead of our usual 2. This is so I don’t have to take my laptop with me on holidays. I will, however, be taking the submissions received prior with me to read, so if you’re expecting a response, you will get one when I get back.

I’ve also recruited some fab people to help out with our Twitter, Facebook, and blog, so you will still be getting your Escape news.

Other than that, I hope you all have a great fortnight, the Easter Bunny is good to you, and that you enjoy our April titles!

Now on to the good stuff:

Lizzie and Darcy getting it done

Yes, I posted it twice. Sue me. I’ve also watched the video about fifteen times.

As a good friend of mine said: “I hope the Internet is paying attention because THAT is what we call a pay off. I don’t even need the next two.”

Now, if you have no idea what’s going on, welcome out from under your rock, and let me introduce you to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a modern day adaptation of Pride and Prejudice created via social media. You can visit the website here: www.lizziebennet.com, and it offers the whole story including selections from Twitter and Tumblr accounts.

Yes – it’s not just videos. Each of the main characters also participates – in character – through twitter and tumblr (and sometimes pintrest). It’s not just re-experiencing P&P, it’s actually being able to interact with it. And if you’re unfamiliar with it, you’re very lucky – you get to watch it almost in its entirety. Some of us had to wait impatiently for new content every Monday and Thursday for almost an entire year.

The creators, Hank Green and Bernie Su, are well known online for innovative web content, but this is the first time they’ve really hit the mainstream. They’ve also changed the game in culture and media, and it will be interesting to see what happens in the future as organisations worldwide watch the story of the Lizzie Bennet story unfold.

And, I’m gonna be honest, this Darcy is to die for.

So tell me, are you a Pride and Prejudice fan? I honestly prefer Sense and Sensibility, and I prefer North and South over both. But there’s still something about Mr Darcy…
